Typescript copy, undated, of an account written in Feb, 1894, by Gilbert Benedict, of Glens Falls, New York, describing a trip to Montana made for improvement of his health. Benedict and three companions reached St. Paul, Minnesota, in April, 1864. In Minnesota they joined soldiers commanded by General Alfred Sully, travelled through Dakota Territory with Sully's army during his Northwestern Indian Expedition, and reached Last Chance Gulch, now Helena, Montana, in September. Benedict describes his observations of the effects of Dakota Indian Wars in Minnesota; progress of the expedition and operations of Sully's army; fighting and other encounters with Indians; and his observations of topography and other natural features.
